Welcome to Tapestry Acres! We are a small family farm moving from Minnesota with our alpaca farm Whispering Oaks Alpacas to Monroe, TN. We have some big dreams for our farm in Tennessee. Come on our journey with us. I will be posting every week or two here about what is going on the farm and daily on Facebook & Instagram so you can follow us there as well.
When we found the perfect property in Tennessee we knew we were bringing our alpacas and goats from Minnesota eventually but our farm up there is still operating through at least the end of 2024 and we were talking about creating some rental cabins on the farm in Tennessee. We had decided we would like to focus on heritage and rare breeds for anyone else we brought onto the farm.
There are wooded areas, meadows, pastures and hay fields, several springs and a pretty house, several barns, a milk barn and even a saw mill. It really is a beautiful spot.
We were hoping to find highland cows and last summer we were visiting June Farms in New York (if you are in the area, they are worth the visit!). They were looking to reduce their herd size of highland cows and we bought 8 highlanders from them! They arrived in December and are currently in our front pasture.
They were here for the big snowstorm that hit Tennessee this winter. They loved the snow. My favorite was that the snow on their backs would melt from their body heat and then freeze in hair, when they ran those little icicles would tinkle as they hit each other.
They now have a beautiful grassy pasture in the Tennessee spring that is much preferable to the Minnesota still winter/mud season
Smokey and Nash the horses made the trip down from Minnesota before winter set and they are staying down here. They are older horses and this is their retirement home.
Our Jersey crosses came down with the horses. Carolina had found a way through the fence and would only let me catch her with a halter and some treats. She would refuse the treats when my dad tried to catch her.
We have a few goats down here already. Buddy and Lit Bit came down from Minnesota and Dude we bought down here. He will be our new buck for the little girls in Minnesota who have Boots (our MN buck) for their dad. These guys love to go around the farm with me and do some weed control!
Batman and Wonder came down from Minnesota and are taking care of the mouse problem! They also are enjoying the warmer weather!
We have purchased more alpacas. The 4 boys are already here and the girls will be arriving this weekend. Shearing is on Sunday!
My dad has been working hard on the alpaca barn and it is looking good. My husband has installed the solar system. Hopefully the well will be installed soon and then we will have water out there too.
We got some Kune Kune piglets. Drove almost down to the Alabama border in thunderstorms to pick them up! My dad has named them Eeny, Meeny, Miny and Moe
The day after the piglets arrived we got our puppies! Two Great Pyrenees pups that are the cutest things! They will be livestock guardians when they are all grown up. Their names are Thelma and Louise.
That's all for now. I'll post next week with an update on the rest of the new alpacas and how shearing went!
